Where’s Dolley Madison When You Need Her?
July 29, 2008 by John H. Taylor | Filed Under Nixon Library
The Nixon Library suffered minor damage as the result of Tuesday’s earthquake, which was centered a few miles from Yorba Linda in the community of Chino Hills. No one was injured. The worst damage was in the White House East Room, where Martha Washington’s portrait and a few chandelier baubles fell to the floor. No structural damage was in evidence on the grounds or in the museum. As the situation was being assessed, Federal officials ordered the Library closed and sent their own and private Foundation staffs home.

Got something to say?

Glad to hear things seem to be all right for the most part. Hope everyone is ok at home, as well. Of course, I can’t really argue the Presidential materials should stay in the DC area! Buildings can suffer damage–from floods, burst pipes, fire–anywhere in the U.S. I remember a news story about a problem with water out at Archives II in College Park some years back. And of course, the original Archives building near the Mall sustained water damage from heavy rains one spring a couple of years ago. And then there was the awful fire at the St. Louis records center a long time ago.
Anyway, hope all is well. My best to everyone associated with the Library and the Foundation.
Thanks, Maarja. All seems to be well, both personally and institutionally. We Californians think we’re used to it — until another one hits!
Glad to hear all is well. Fascinating to see the photo, thanks for posting it. Anyone who knows me well knows that when I left its employ in 1990, I left a significant piece of myself back with NARA’s Nixon Project. I always wish it and now the successor Library well — although reasonable people can disagree as to how that should be accomplished. Those things never are far from my mind and chatty as I am about these things, I even posted some advice under my HNN article this morning, LOL.
Back to photos. I love the Nixon Library’s when Nixon met Elvis virtual exhibit. I recently had occasion to point out to some people. I hope the Library is able to post more and more virtual exhibits over time.
All my best to everyone,
Maarja
